What Degree do I need to be a Flash Designer?

What is Flash Design?

A Flash designer creates web applications using the Adobe Flash program. It delivers exciting, full-screen games with full keyboard support across browsers (including Chrome, Firefox, and Internet Explorer) and operating systems (Mac and Windows). Its original name was Macromedia Flash. It is known now as Adobe Flash software. Macromedia is the name of the original software design company, which Adobe Systems acquired in 2005.

Flash designers are the creative minds behind the development and implementation of interactive, animated graphics, and text on websites. The software allows flash designers to build stunning, blazing-fast cinematic 2D and 3D games. Game designers use fully accelerated GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) rendering, which leverages the power of OpenGL and DirectX graphics. The GPU sits on the graphics card. Its primary task is to process data into images on the screen.

Undergraduate Degree ProgramsEducation

Education options in this field may include a diploma in web design, an associate’s degree in graphic design or Web design, or a bachelor’s degree in media arts. All of these programs, regardless of length, offer you courses in Adobe Flash and other Adobe programs such as Dreamweaver, Illustrator, and Photoshop. You may also take courses in programming languages, design, and coding. Courses may teach design principles and offer training on the technical side of web design. Media arts and graphic design programs may focus more on creativity and design, where web design programs may be more technical in nature.

However, to become a professional Flash designer, a bachelor’s degree is your best option. There are several majors to choose from, such as animation, motion graphics, digital arts, or web design. Many arts and computer-based degree programs offer courses in video and website design. You will not only learn to create web-based Flash content but will also gain an understanding of platform and browser compatibility. Programs typically cover various other third-party software programs and markup languages, which also can be helpful in web design.

There are several degree programs to pursue. A degree in computer programming, graphic design, animation, or illustration will benefit your career. A bachelor’s degree in digital arts will typically provide applicable coursework in computer graphics, flash media, web design, and motion graphics.

Another recommendation is an undergraduate degree in a program offering graphic design, information technology, or network technology. Most design and technology programs feature courses that specialize in Flash design, along with classes in design theory and visual arts.

Instead of the leap into a baccalaureate degree, you can opt for an associate’s degree in digital media. This will cover much of the same courses as the bachelor’s program. The associate degree will acquaint you with Adobe Flash, Dreamweaver (another former Macromedia product), and CAD (computer-aided design). Adobe Dreamweaver is one of the most popular professional web design programs available. Both designers and developers use Dreamweaver for its power and flexibility.

The flexibility of Flash does not extend to mobile devices. Individuals with aspirations of working on mobile applications should forego learning Flash. The late Steve Jobs declared that iOS devices not only would not support Flash but that they would never support Flash. Why? A combination of factors. Flash was a proprietary system created by Adobe and not an open Web standard. Open alternatives were already available, such as HTML5. While Flash is incredible for desktop use, eventually there may not be enough desktop users to make it worthwhile.

Apple believes that over time, Web page developers will use HTML5 and will have no need to use Flash. This appears to be an accurate prediction, as Adobe has already stopped development work on Flash for mobile devices.

Training Resource

Individuals who want training in Adobe products can obtain this online. Adobe Digital Learning Services provides learning, enablement, and certification. You can also browse their full course descriptions to help you learn more about specific products. Adobe offers both virtual instructor-led courses and videos on demand so you can learn where and when it is convenient for you.

Certification

Earning your Adobe Certified Expert designation will enhance your skills and look impressive on your resume. Certification exams measure expert-level proficiency with Adobe solutions. They also demonstrate your ability to meet complex challenges with a mastery that comes with training and real-world product use. You are not required to complete training before taking an exam; however, training can significantly increase your knowledge and skills within an Adobe Marketing Cloud Solution.

Gaming animation, web cartoons, and even some animated film are the creations of flash designers. Adobe Flash is a program that creates multimedia content on web pages – such as games, movie trailers, etc. With the use of Flash, you can create colorful and innovative web pages that are interactive and pleasing to the eye. They have more capabilities than simple HTML web pages since they are interactive and attention-grabbing. The spectrum of applications for Flash creates a demand for skilled designers in the world of animation design.

A Flash designer that specializes in multimedia projects has quite a few job opportunities in many industries. Advertising firms, new media consultancies and other companies that require virtual design are ideal for educated and motivated Flash designers. Self-employment in this field is a consideration also.

The salary data site Payscale reports the national average salary for graphic designers at $41,000. Individuals with the skill of Adobe Illustrator or Dreamweaver would earn 1% less than the average. Similarly, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) does not provide information specific to the field of Flash designers. The BLS reported the median salary for graphic designers at $48,700 in May 2017 with a Bachelor’s degree. They projected the growth rate of this occupation to be only 4% through 2026. In contrast, web developers had a median income of $67,990 with an Associate’s degree, per the BLS. Their expected growth rate is 15% through 2026 or the change of 24,400 jobs.
