There are many categories to computer security. These include cyber security, information systems, and information assurance. This article will address some of the degrees in this field that offer the most expeditious means to complete.

Bachelor of Science in Information Technology

The Information Assurance and Cybersecurity Specialization prepares you to fill the skills gap in the cybersecurity field and can help you play an important role in the infrastructure that supports commerce, banking, telecommunications, health care, and national security. You will learn about security ethics, policies, laws, regulations, technical strategies, and network architecture design.

Designed for working adults, a FlexPath format allows you to complete each course at your own pace. Once you’ve successfully demonstrated the competencies in each assessment in the course, you will have shown your mastery—and can move on to your next course. There are no deadlines as you set the target dates for each course. This learning format speeds up your education by taking less time on courses you find easier, and taking more time on the more challenging work. The completion can be as low as 12 months, however that may not be realistic for most working adults.

Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity

In as few as 18 months, innovative curriculum and hands-on virtual lab learning opportunities will prepare you to take in-demand certification exams. During this time, you learn how to protect data and information against malicious cyber threats. The study plan covers courses in four main areas: Advanced Network, Vulnerability Analysis, Security Awareness, and Security Risk Management. As a graduate, you will be prepared for in-demand industry certification exams: Systems Security Certified Practitioner (SSCP), Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) and CompTIA Cybersecurity Analyst (CSA+).

There is a learning format known as Flex Choice, which is a Competency-Based Education (CBE). It allows you maximize your credits, and choose your blend of traditional courses, competency-based education, or self-directed assessments. CBE is a means for students to get credit for what they know, build on their knowledge and skills by learning more at their own pace. In short, this format allows students to show what they know as soon as they know it—which means student learning is measured by the demonstration of skills and competencies, rather than hours spent in a classroom.

Flex Choice courses and assessments allow you to move at your own pace. You can speed up or slow down as your schedule allows. This means you can take the time you need to get through a challenging week in a traditional course or focus on responsibilities at work or home. Then you can speed back up when you feel ready.

Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems

This degree provides the knowledge for you to advance to a career in Network Security, Systems Administration, Technology Support, Systems Analyst, and Informatics. This CIS major teaches operating systems, systems security, networks, and more. The Cybersecurity concentration of the program includes security auditing, computer forensics, legal issues in cybersecurity, and data communications.

The accelerated degree uses FLEX format with the choice of either Blended or Online format.

Blended: Classes run for eight weeks with a combination of one on-campus session and one online assignment each week from the comfort of your home or office.

Online: Online or Distance Learning classes run for eight weeks with two online “sessions” each week that you can “attend” from the comfort of your own home or office.

Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity

The degree prepares skilled information technology specialists for jobs in information and network security in all types of industries. The online cybersecurity degree covers information security theory and applies it to skills for the protection of technology systems and the detection of vulnerabilities in those systems. Graduates will be able to:

  • Evaluate fundamental cybersecurity concepts, theories, and strategies as they apply to real world case studies.
  • Explain technical and non-technical security solutions on different types of cyber systems.

An accelerated cohort option is available. You only need to register for your courses once. Your student coach/advisor will check in with you on a regular basis to make sure you are on track to graduate.

When you have earned at least 60 credit hours or an Associate’s Degree, you are ready to enter an undergraduate cohort degree program.

The accelerated cohort portion consists of 40 credit hours in your major plus 9 hours in a series that focuses on various institutions and traditions of Western Civilization.

One School-Three Degrees

One school stands out as offering degrees at three levels in an accelerated format. East Coast Polytechnic Institute (ECPI) University offers a wide range of Associate degree programs in fields that are poised for growth. They offer an Associate’s degree in Computer and Information Science with a concentration in Cyber and Network Security. Completion is possible within 1.5 years through the school’s year-round degree program.

The same year-round format allows you to earn a Bachelor of Science in Computer and Information Science with a major in Cyber and Network Security in 2.5 years.

ECPI’s Master of Science in Cybersecurity focuses on the principles and concepts related to the development and management of secure information systems and technology at the enterprise and individual levels, locally and globally.  This degree is also attainable in less than 16 months through their accelerated, year-round schedule.
