DegreeQuery has assembled this list of accredited colleges/universities that offer graduate programs in mathematics, whether it is the application or teaching of the subject. The majority involve master’s programs in teaching mathematics from kindergarten to community college levels.

The ranking system has been calculated based on retention and graduation rates, as well as in-state graduate tuition. The respective weights assigned for the three are 60%, 40%, and 20%. The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) in conjunction with CollegeNavigator provides the data. The NCES reports data for retention and graduation rates at the undergraduate level only, which we believe is a credible indicator for application to these graduate degrees.

As you will read, some of these schools have multiple degrees for teaching mathematics at different academic levels. We have treated these individually because of the areas of specialization within the respective master’s programs.

1. Colorado State University

Colorado State University’s online Master of Applied Statistics (MAS) focuses on two outcomes — sharpening your ability to determine and apply statistical procedures to data and providing you opportunities to communicate statistical findings. Prepare to meet the growing demands of today’s data-dominated employment landscape, and become more equipped to make an impact in nearly any industry, in nearly any situation where people need answers. You will develop a breadth of tools to help you design effective studies, make inferences from raw data, and translate those inferences into meaningful contexts. In addition, you will learn to use graphics and data visualization to communicate actionable information to those without statistical backgrounds to help organizations drive important decisions.

The program will enable students to start working as practicing statisticians in industry, government, or academia immediately after graduation. Taught by the same faculty, and featuring the same curriculum as the on-campus program, you earn the same regionally accredited degree as on-campus students. Considered a terminal degree, this program is intended for those who plan to pursue a career outside of academia, rather than pursue a Ph.D.

Founded in 1870, it has a total undergraduate enrollment of 25,177 with a campus size of 586 acres. CSU Online has a staff of about 70 professionals. Key teams include Program Development and Management, Marketing and Communications, Student Success and Engagement, Finance, Learning Technologies, and Research and Analytics.

2. Texas A&M University

The online Master of Science in Mathematics offers a rich experience in the History of Mathematics, Geometry, Modeling, as well as the latest in Information Technology skills. This 36-semester hour graduate program is designed for individuals with interests in mathematics, with a particular desire to teach in K-12 and community colleges or in computational math. Primarily this program is intended for individuals with a solid background in mathematics, such as a degree in a mathematically related subject. Because Texas A&M offers the G6 classification, which is a postgraduate nondegree-seeking status, it is not necessary to enroll in graduate school to enjoy the benefits of the program.

The Computational Math Track requires a minimum of 36 credits with at least 24 must be in mathematics. There must be 12 credit hours in specialized mathematics courses consisting of the following:

  • Numerical Analysis
  • Linear Algebra for Applications
  • Computational Linear Algebra
  • Mathematical Communication and Technology

The remainder of the curriculum consists of 12 hours of graduate distance math courses from a list of 10 courses, plus one course in statistical methods. This leaves 9 of 36 credits to be chosen in consultation with the student’s advisor.

The university offers instruction that leads to bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in mathematics. Over 25,000 students enroll in their courses each year. In addition to their regularly scheduled classes, they offer a wide array of web-assisted supplemental instructional services.

3. Texas A&M University

A&M’s online teaching track also provides a Master of Science in Mathematics for individuals with aspirations to teach in K-12 and community colleges.  As with the computational track, this program is geared towards individuals with a solid background in mathematics, such as a degree in a mathematically related subject. Students acquire a solid mathematical background together with the necessary pedagogical skills and support coursework from other departments, such as Statistics and Education. The main emphasis of the degree is to produce future educators who will provide high-quality content-based instruction.

The coursework requires a minimum of 36 credit hours with at least 24 in mathematics. There must be 12 credit hours in specialized mathematics courses consisting of the following:

  • Survey of Mathematical Problems I
  • Survey of Mathematical Problems II
  • History of Mathematics
  • Mathematical Communication and Technology

There must be 12 hours of graduate distance mathematics courses, selected from a list of eleven. In addition, students choose two graduate courses in Education (the student has the option of an emphasis at either the secondary or collegiate level). The remainder is the selection of one course in statistical methods.

Regardless of which track you choose, students in the Masters of Science in Mathematics at a Distance Program are required to take a final oral exam. This exam will be administered during your final term. Begin arrangements within the first month of the semester, prior to taking the exam. The exam will be mediated through TTVN (it’s free). In order to be eligible to take the exam, your cumulative and degree plan GPR’s must be at least 3.00.

4. James Madison University

Their Master of Education in Mathematics is a collaborative effort of the College of Education and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. It is designed to provide opportunities for mathematics teachers to deepen their understanding of mathematics by learning advanced mathematical topics in relation to the mathematics they actually teach. The program will help prepare teachers to teach advanced secondary mathematics courses, such as Advanced Placement Calculus or Statistics. The courses provide opportunities for teachers to learn math-specific technologies for learning, how to implement appropriate mathematics curriculum and how to continue to develop as professional educators. In addition, the program is designed to develop teachers’ understanding of and ability to apply education research to their own practice.The program content is consistent with the recommendations of the Mathematical Education of Teachers’ report of the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences.

Students should have completed undergraduate mathematics (15 credits or more) including a calculus sequence and linear algebra. An undergraduate major in mathematics or additional mathematics courses beyond linear algebra will be helpful, but not necessary.

James Madison University is a top producer of Fulbright scholars according to the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs for masters-level institutions. JMU ranks 62nd on Kiplinger’s Personal Finance’s list of the top 100 Best Values in Public Colleges. In addition, it ranks #2 by US News & World Report in the category of Best Public Schools in the South.

5. North Carolina State University

NC State offers an online Master’s of Statistics, which has many of the courses run concurrently with the on-campus courses and lectures. Some online courses are specially designed to take advantage of web learning and will not be concurrent with on-campus courses. The 30 semester hours program consists of 21 hours of required coursework and 9 credit hours of electives. Some of the required courses involve Experimental Statistics for Biological Sciences, Fundamentals of Statistical Inferences, and Statistical Programming.

The minimal requirements for entry are an undergraduate degree and coursework in calculus through multivariate calculus (comparable to MA 242) and linear algebra. In the application process, your credentials (transcripts and personal statement) will be evaluated for determining acceptance into the Master of Statistics online degree program.

The Princeton Review ranked NC State #9 in its September 2016 Top Online MBA Programs List. NC State ranks #1 among North Carolina universities for the value of its education. Their Online programs in graduate education rank 4th in the nation. In addition, they have 11 graduate programs among the top 30 in their field nationally. Their graduates also rank in the Top 20 as most desirable by job recruiters

6. University of Washington

UW’s Professional and Continuing Education offers an online Master of Science in Applied Mathematics. This degree program prepares students for dynamic careers in actuarial science, finance, medical research, energy, and education, and more. This interdisciplinary program offers a thorough grounding in mathematical methods that underlie the physical, engineering, and biological sciences. To earn this degree, students in the program must complete a minimum of 36-quarter credits. The average is 42 credits. The program requirements include:

  • Four core courses (20 credits total)
  • Minimum of 24 credits in applied mathematics
  • Minimum of 9 numerically graded courses, with a GPA of 2.7 or higher in each and an overall GPA of 3.2 or higher.
  • Students are also required to meet all UW Graduate School master’s degree requirements.

In addition to applied mathematics courses, you may be able to take online elective courses outside the department. These courses must be worth a minimum of three credits, graduate level, numerically graded and mathematically relevant.

Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, applied mathematics or another branch of science or engineering. You should also have completed coursework in calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, and numerical analysis or scientific computing.

Founded in 1861, UW is one of the world’s preeminent public universities. Ranked No. 10 in the world in Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s 2015 rankings, the UW educates more than 54,000 students annually. It ranks No. 7 on Kiplinger’s 300 Best College Values for 2018 among public universities. As outlined in a recent Microsoft story, their scholarship program is unique for its public-private partnership design. Under the program, the state matches private donations dollar-for-dollar.

7. University of Iowa

The school offers a Master of Science in STEM Education online to prepare teachers, instructional leaders and curriculum developers for the emerging needs of STEM programs in schools. The program fulfills the need for improving STEM education by training effective educators who specialize in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The degree is a collaboration between the Science Education and Mathematics Education programs. Candidates in the program simultaneously earn the M.S. while completing most of the requirements necessary to obtain the Iowa K-12 STEM Education Specialist endorsement (this endorsement is only for the state of Iowa). Candidates seeking the endorsement will need to complete additional coursework before applying to the Iowa Board of Education Examiners.

A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited American college or university, or an equivalent degree from another country as determined by the Office of Graduate Admissions. This transcript is not needed if this degree was conferred from the University of Iowa. Preferred candidates should have a degree in a science or math area, science or math education, a degree in elementary education with a science or math emphasis, or professional experience in these areas. Teaching licensure/certification is recommended for the M.S. degree and required if the candidate seeks the Iowa K-12 STEM Education Specialist Endorsement.

The College of Education offers top-ranked academic degree programs in teaching and learning, higher education, education policy, counseling, rehabilitation, and measurement. U.S. News & World Report ranks their College of Education as #1 in Iowa. The National Council of Teacher Quality ranks them in the Top 2% for Secondary Education.

8. University of Missouri-Columbia

The College of Education in tandem with the Department of Learning, Teaching, and Curriculum offers a Master of Education with an emphasis in mathematics education. If you are a certified, practicing teacher wanting to fulfill your continuing education requirements while preparing for a leadership position, this may be the degree for you. This Mizzou Online program emphasizes:

  • Current issues in mathematics education
  • Elementary or secondary mathematics content
  • Increasing equity in mathematics teaching and learning
  • Recent research in mathematics education
  • Strategies for incorporating technology into mathematics instruction

Most students take one or two classes each semester and finish in two years. You may also tailor the coursework for teaching at any grade level with optional areas of focus in elementary or secondary education. Successful completion of the program requires 32 credit hours: 16 credit hours related to mathematics education or mathematics, 12 from electives, and 4 for your master’s project.

While this program is intended for certified mathematics instructors, certification is not required for admission. Admission does require a completed bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.

The University of Missouri is a national leader in online education. Mizzou offers the second-most distance degree and certificate programs in the SEC and among the AAU public institutions. In the academic year 2016-17, online students came from 48 states and 50 countries outside the United States.

9. University of Northern Iowa

The Department of Mathematics offers three graduate degrees for aspiring teachers from elementary to community college level. The Department of Mathematics at the University of Northern Iowa offers a Master of Arts program in Mathematics for the Middle Grades (4-8). The purpose of the program is to develop highly trained, knowledgeable teachers of mathematics at the middle grades level (grades 4-8) who possess the ability, insight, confidence, and commitment to implement mathematics programs as envisioned by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Standards. Program content, understandings, and experiences are directly linked to your teaching. As a member of a cohort of practicing middle grades mathematics teachers, you will find that the friendships, support, and camaraderie found in the program with other teachers going through similar experiences.

You should be certified and have experience teaching mathematics before applying. Fall and spring courses in this program are available online using eLearning, a Blackboard learning management system requiring Internet access and a web browser.

10. University of Northern Iowa

One option is their Master of Arts in Mathematics (Secondary Teaching Emphasis) that is designed to extend the content and pedagogical knowledge of secondary school mathematics teachers. The program incorporates a dynamic relationship between theory and practice and focuses on the development of teachers as reflective practitioners and lead teachers. The online program uses a cohort model in which groups of students move through the coursework together, with courses delivered via eLearning. Some summer courses may require limited on-campus attendance, in addition to eLearning. The program offers a non-thesis option only, however, it requires a culminating research paper.

Applicants should have experience teaching mathematics and be certified for the Secondary Teaching program. The selection process considers your commitment to change, a willingness to incorporate new activities and approaches in the classroom, involvement in professional growth opportunities and administrative support for district leadership. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is not required for admission into the program.

11. University of Northern Iowa

The third graduate degree offered by their Department of Mathematics is the Master of Arts in Mathematics (Community College Teaching Emphasis). It is designed to serve those preparing for a career in community college teaching or working professionals seeking career advancement. This is a mathematically robust degree program whose content, understandings, and experiences are directly and explicitly linked to the world of practice. The distance program uses a cohort model in which groups of students move through the coursework together, with courses delivered online via eLearning.

Fall and spring courses in this program are offered online using eLearning, a Blackboard learning management system requiring Internet access and a web browser. Summer sessions include two weeks of in-person instruction at UNI, set on a beautiful 900-acre campus. Students who desire housing on campus will need to contact the UNI Department of Residence.

U.S. News & World Report recognized Northern Iowa as one of the highest-ranked, regional universities (Midwest category) for 2017. The Washington Monthly College Guide ranks the University of Northern Iowa 27th in the Midwest category for America’s Best Bang for the Buck Colleges 2015. Additionally, according to Teach Tomorrow, the award-winning faculty, great resources, and flexibility of their programs put the school at No. 13 in the nation for 2015.

12. Oregon State University

Oregon State’s 45-credit Master of Education (Ed.M.) degree program online will help you meet your professional development requirements and advance your career in K-12 or informal education. There are four options available, one of which is the advanced science and mathematics education curriculum.

If you’re an educator with at least one year of experience, you will use your classroom or informal learning setting as your lab to apply educational research, theory, and pedagogical practices, and to complete a research project. Degree completion is obtainable within two years with the allowance of up to 15 graduate credits eligible for transfer.

In compliance with an agreement with the Oregon Higher Education Coordinating Commission for participation in the State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (SARA), Oregon State University provides information regarding professional licensure through distance education. The courses and programs, delivered online by OSU Ecampus, are not formally approved for professional licensure outside of the state of Oregon.

OSU has received numerous awards for their education prowess, particularly by U.S. News & World Report. This publication ranked the school as Best Online Bachelor’s Programs (2014-2018) and Best for Veterans (2015-2018).

13. East Carolina University

Established in 1907, ECU is a public research university that is part of the University of North Carolina System and is located in Greenville. They currently offer more than 70 master’s degree programs, 2 intermediate programs, and over 60 graduate certificate programs through our 11 colleges and schools. US News ranks their Online Graduate Education Programs as #16 of 278 graduate schools.

The College of Education offers a Master of Arts in Education that ranges from 36-39 hours, depending on the teaching field selected. The choice of nine specialties covers areas such as Health, Physical, Reading, Science, Middle Grades, and Special Education. All MAEd degree programs require completion of coursework in the following competency areas: research, trends, and issues in education; the diverse learner; and, effective communication and leadership. In addition, all applicants must currently hold or be eligible for an initial teaching license.

The curriculum for all teaching areas consists of 9-12 semester hours of core courses, followed by 24-30 hours from your chosen specialty. The middle grades education teaching area has Modern Mathematics for Junior High School Teachers I & II and Advanced Middle-Level Mathematics Methods within the mathematics concentration area. Elementary and middle grades mathematics programs are offered in a distance education format. The Department of Mathematics offers a high school concentration, however the mathematics courses are delivered on-campus. All other coursework is available online.

14. Slippery Rock University

The Master of Education in Elementary Education: K-8 Math and Science program at SRU will assist certified teachers in becoming leaders in the instruction of mathematics and science through special emphasis on the integration of the two areas. This program is ideal for working educators with all classes taught exclusively online. Students in this program will enter as a cohort group in the summer or winter and complete coursework over four semesters. Graduate candidates in this 30-credit hour program do not take courses in math and science content, but rather take courses to improve their ability to teach math and science by utilizing technology tools and state/national standards, and examining exemplary curricula.

Slippery Rock University opened its doors March 26, 1889, as Slippery Rock State Normal School with the primary purpose of training teachers. In 1926, the Commonwealth purchased the institution and renamed it Slippery Rock State Teachers College. It became a four-year teachers college and continued the tradition of teacher training. The University has earned full institutional accreditation through the Middle State Commission on Higher Learning and discipline-specific accreditation. In 1960, the school, now Slippery Rock State College, could award undergraduate and graduate degrees in the liberal arts and in the professions.

15. University of Kentucky

The College of Arts and Sciences offers an online Master of Applied Statistics degree. The program was developed in an effort to reach a wide audience including working scientists, traditional and non-traditional students and professionals looking to expand career opportunities through building statistical expertise. The program’s 1-year, 2-year, and 4-year track options allow students the flexibility to complete the coursework at their own pace. The curriculum consists of 11 online courses that focus on the discovery of statistical techniques and approaches through data visualization and computing.

The Master of Applied Statistics will provide students with a variety of skills that include managing ‘big’ data and successfully describing, analyzing and making inferences using current and rapidly evolving statistical methodologies. These data analytic and computing skills will prepare students for a variety of positions as statisticians in industries such as Google, Intel and Pfizer, Wall Street and a number of federal, state and local government agencies.

The University of Kentucky regularly is listed in many “top” or “best of” categories by national publications or organizations. The following is an ever-growing list of national rankings:

16. Ball State University

Ball State offers three graduate degrees in mathematics for those interested in teaching the subject. One option is the Master of Arts in Mathematics Education that you can earn 100 percent online with the choice of three concentrations: Elementary to Middle School, Secondary School, and Elementary and Middle School Specialists. This first option is for applicants who hold an elementary, middle school, or special education teaching license and at least one year of teaching experience. The study plan begins with choosing four courses out of five from the Content Knowledge for Teaching Mathematics (12 credits) list. Next are the Research and Pedagogical Knowledge courses (12 credits/4 courses). The last learning phase is the Electives in Content or Pedagogical Knowledge (6 credits). There are 11 courses of 3 credits each in the electives.

A second option is Mathematics Education for Secondary School Teachers whose online format is similar to the previous program. The coursework is 30-32 credits with 12 credits of Content Knowledge, 3-8 credits of Electives in Content Knowledge, 12 credits of Research and Pedagogical Knowledge, and 0-3 credits of Electives in Pedagogical Knowledge.

Applicants must meet these criteria:

  • Graduated with an undergraduate major in mathematics or the equivalent background as determined by the Department of Mathematical Sciences
  • Hold a current secondary mathematics teaching license
  • Have at least one year of secondary mathematics teaching experience

17. Ball State University

The second degree offered online is the Master’s Degree Concentration in Mathematics Education for Elementary and Middle School Specialists. Applicants may qualify for this 36-credit program if you hold a middle school mathematics or elementary teaching license and have at least three years of teaching experience.

The curriculum consists of 15 credits of Content Knowledge for Teaching Mathematics, 12 credits of Pedagogical Knowledge, 3 credits of Research, and 6 credits of Leadership Knowledge and Skills.

All of the Ball State online courses in the mathematics education concentrations are taught in an asynchronous format. This provides the convenience of working on weekly assignments at the times and places most convenient to you.

18. Ball State University

Ball State’s third online is their Master of Arts in post-secondary Foundational Mathematics Teaching for educators who aspire to teach at the community college level. You will learn to teach general education mathematics courses that are not calculus-based. The program combines topics in math content, math pedagogy, and the needs of adult learners, all of which are important components of programs for community college instructors. Students can complete the program in 18 months to two years as a full-time student. However, if you are teaching full time in a community college and want to attend part-time, you can finish in 2½ to 3 years, by completing one course each semester.

On July 25, 1917, the Ball brothers, industrialists and founders of the Ball Corporation, acquired the foreclosed Indiana Normal Institute for $35,100 and gifted the school and surrounding land to the State of Indiana. Today, the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching classifies the school as a research university. They offer almost 190 undergraduate majors and more than 145 graduate programs. In addition, the school has more than 70 online undergraduate and graduate degrees, certificates, and licenses. Their online graduate education programs are ranked 11th in the nation, according to U.S. News & World Report. Intel Corporation ranked Ball State as the “most unwired” campus in the nation in 2005, due to their extensive Wi-Fi access points (625).

19. Drexel University

Drexel University’s accredited online Master’s of Science in Mathematics Learning and Teaching equips teachers with the techniques to help them reason through mathematical challenges with an analytical multiple-solution approach. The 45-credits program is organized into four 10-week quarters per year (as opposed to the traditional two-semester system) which means you can take more courses in a shorter time. One semester credit is equivalent to 1.5-quarter credits.

The program provides you with the disposition, skills, and breadth of expertise needed to implement problem-based and technology-intensive instruction that is student-centered. It is beneficial for teachers interested in further study and higher earning potential in cutting-edge mathematics learning and teaching. This program also equips you with leadership skills that will enable you to advocate better educational practices in your homeschool and district.

As a top-ranked, regionally accredited institution, known for its interdisciplinary approach to applied education, Drexel consistently gets high marks from employers for its online degree and certificate programs. The school ranks as a Best College in the category of National Universities Best Value by U.S. News & World Report.

20. Montana State University

The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers a Master of Science in Mathematics-Mathematics Education option or MSMME. This online program provides opportunities for teachers to try out ideas in their own classrooms. Their students become a source of data for investigations and applications ranging from learning theory to mathematical modeling. To varying degrees, MSMME courses include the following experiences:

  1. Classroom Experiments: Short-term assignments that engage teachers and their students in exploring new mathematics content, teaching strategies, or theory.
  2. Living Laboratory: Projects are embedded in each pedagogy course and become part of the program portfolio. Teachers may research and investigate a key issue; experiment and report results regarding a strategy; model and reflect on a scenario through simulation or role-play, or otherwise engage in applied professional learning.
  3. Action Research: Provides an opportunity to more formally develop a question about teaching, design an intervention, collect and analyze data, and reflect on results and next steps.

A significant portion of the courses is offered on a regular basis using online learning technologies in an asynchronous, computer-mediated format using Desire2Learn. Courses may use textbooks, problems, calculators, and data gathering devices, online statistical packages and other software, and Web-based applications including interactive applets, videos, and databases. Approximately two-thirds of MSMME courses are offered via distance delivery.

Established in 1893, MSU is the state’s largest university and is among the top 3% of colleges and universities for research expenditures, and the Carnegie Foundation classifies the school as an institution with a high undergraduate profile.

21. Lesley University

Lesley University’s online Master’s in Mathematics Education, Professional License of Non-Licensure, starts with developing your skills in assessment, content delivery, and meeting the needs of diverse students. Designed for teachers, curriculum specialists, and instructional resource leaders, this program provides effective methods for teaching mathematics in grades 1-8. The curriculum combines an in-depth study of mathematics content with ways to connect and apply that knowledge to classroom practice. With coursework grounded in the latest educational approaches, you will study operations of arithmetic, number theory, algebra, geometry, probability, and more.

Devised with the purpose of combining practical skill development with relevant educational theory, you will develop advanced teaching techniques that will make an impact in your classroom. As you become a content expert and learn how best to approach teaching math to your students, you will unlock their potential and prepare them with the STEM skill sets they will need for ongoing success.

The convenient online format gives you the flexibility to study when and where you want. You will learn in a virtual community that supports you, with interactive elements like chats and discussion forums that keep you connected.

An independent study by Radius Global Market Research reported the employer preference for hiring K-12 educators who have graduated from a Teacher Preparation Program in the state of Massachusetts. Lesley University was #1 followed by Boston College, Boston University, and Northeastern University.

22. Wilkes University

The university offers a Master of Science in Education degrees in a host of concentrations online, face-to-face, and blended learning formats. One of these is the MS in Middle-Level Education (EDML) that provides further concentrations in Mathematics, Science, English/Language Arts, and Social Studies. The degree prepares teachers to meet the needs of adolescent learners and prepares candidates to apply for Pennsylvania’s grades 4-8 certificate in a particular content area.

Two options are available for Pennsylvania teachers who hold Level I or Level II instructional certification:

  • The 36-credit degree plus certification option culminates with a semester-long internship and is approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education as a certification preparation program.
  • The 30-credit degree option meets the needs of teachers who wish to add the Grades 4-8 certification through PDE’s “test only” option, or who do not wish to seek certification.

The 36-credit degree plus certification option culminates with an internship course, during which students will work under the mentorship of a middle-level educator in their area of specialization in a local school setting. Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.

This institution, known today as Wilkes University, began in 1933 when Bucknell University established its Junior College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. In 1947, Wilkes College becomes an independent, nondenominational four-year college, with programs in the arts, sciences, and a number of professional fields as well as a full program of extra-curricular activities. The Department of Mathematics offers a Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) Mathematics degree online through Engineering Outreach. This is a non-thesis degree requiring a minimum of 30 credits to graduate. You will also have to pass a comprehensive exam at the conclusion of your coursework. The M.A.T. is designed primarily for certified teachers who wish to strengthen their subject matter preparation. Receiving this degree does not give certification in high school teaching. In some cases, this degree may qualify you to teach at some community colleges.

At the conclusion of the M.A.T. coursework, a student must satisfactorily pass a three-hour written comprehensive exam covering mathematics courses from their study plan. For distance education students, proctoring arrangements for the exam are available so that you will not need to visit the Moscow, Idaho campus for the exam. 29. Emporia State University

To fulfill the requirements for the thesis option the student must complete 32 hours of acceptable graduate work including a thesis. The thesis will be worth either 3 or 5 credit hours, MA 850, Thesis Requirement. For the non-thesis option, the student must take 34 hours of acceptable graduate work including at least one hour of MA 810, Seminar in Mathematics, which would involve the presentation of a seminar.

30. Aurora University

The university offers an online Master of Arts in Mathematics Education for teachers eager to expand their understanding of mathematical concepts and their usage throughout the K-12 spectrum. Secondary teachers who seek to increase their knowledge of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) content will be introduced to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for mathematics and the practices associated with them.

Founded in 1893 in Mendota, Illinois, the university began as a seminary that prepared graduates for ministry. Today, their online degree programs provide distance learners with a dynamic and interactive learning environment focused on a comprehensive curriculum. Aurora offers courses year-round in convenient five- to eight-week modules for the convenience of working professionals.

31. Western Kentucky University

The Master of Arts in Mathematics online program is for students who are secondary teachers who already hold teacher certification and are seeking rank change through earning a Master’s degree. In addition, this program prepares teachers to teach dual credit classes and at a community college or technical school. However, the degree does not provide initial teacher certification or prepare a student for doctoral studies in mathematics.

Applicants to this 30-34 credit hours program need a bachelor’s degree in mathematics or the completion of six math undergraduate courses. Applicants must also have or be eligible for a teaching certificate in Secondary Mathematics (Grades 8-12). Kentucky teachers whose certificates have expired are eligible to apply, but they may enroll in no more than six hours before they must apply to the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board for re-issued certificates. After completion of six hours, a student admitted with an expired certificate must submit a copy of the re-issued certificate before registering for any additional courses. Applicants from out-of-state with expired certificates must complete the requirements for their respective states to renew their certificates and submit a copy of the reissued certificate.

The curriculum consists of 18 hours of mathematics, which is inclusive of six hours of electives. The Secondary Education phase of 13-16 hours develops Teacher Leaders who can positively affect student learning in their classrooms and schools. Courses and experiences include Professional Learning Communities in which students interact with other graduate students from various content areas and grade levels.

32. Chadron State College

The college offers a Master of Arts in Education in a Science or Mathematics concentration, though only the latter is available online. Both programs consist of 15-18 hours of Core Courses and the same for the electives. The core courses are Research Design & Data Analysis, Curriculum Development or Public Relations, Statistical Methods, Sampling Techniques, and Master’s Thesis or Scholarly Project. Students select their electives with their advisor and advisory committee. Entrance to the program is contingent on supplying proof of a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution with a grade point average of 2.75 or better on a 4.00 scale.

Two of the learning outcomes for students graduating with the MAE in Science and Mathematics are:

33. New York Institute of Technology

NYIT’s 36-credit Master of Science in Adolescence Education prepares master teachers for professional certification with the knowledge and skills to integrate technology and use culturally responsive instructional strategies to teach all students. This program offers a choice between mathematics or science specialist. The math program teaches instructional technology, pedagogy, adolescent development, and data-driven instructional strategies. The program is aimed at elementary and middle school teachers who want to advance their own knowledge of science and mathematics (as part of the STEM core) subjects, this specialization provides strategies and a framework for ensuring that your students gain a strong foundation in mathematics and science as defined by the Common Core State Standards.

Two outcomes of this degree are for graduates to:

  • Develop and communicate a plan which uses inquiry, technology, and critical analysis for teaching students to distinguish science from non-science, to understand the evolution and practice of science as a human endeavor, and to envision an integration of scientific knowledge, pedagogy, history, and philosophy.
  • Recognize that an informed citizenry, in order to make decisions on contemporary scientific and technological issues, must conduct analyses of the facts of such issues and assess possible actions and outcomes through activities such as creating informed scientific communities looking at societal implications of the decisions and communicating to the broader population.

Designed for elementary school math teachers, this specialization can help you develop more effective mathematics teaching practices so you can excite young learners. Graduates will be able to:
