The field of nutrition includes nutrition science, dietetics, health, and wellness. The degree choices enable you to seek careers in research, consulting, public health, food and nutrition management, and various industries. In addition, dietetics can lead you to becoming a Registered Dietitian. Careers in this field exist in hospitals, long-term care facilities, businesses, consulting, and schools. The school offers a Bachelor of Science in Food and Nutrition. The degree consists of 56 hours of major courses, 20 hours of science courses and 44 hours of general education courses. Students are required to complete the following five science courses.

UA’s College of Agriculture & Life Sciences offers a Bachelor of Science with a Nutrition emphasis. The coursework within the major includes nutritional biology and metabolism, food science and safety, nutrition assessment, and therapeutic diets. Nutritional science combines medicine, food chemistry, cell biology, and biochemistry with a focus on nutrition and foods. Specialized courses are available in Sports Nutrition, Diet Genes and Disease, and Experiential Learning in Nutritional Sciences.

Students may specialize in either dietetics or nutrition. The dietetics option allows the student to apply to dietetic internships and become registered dietitians through the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The Nutrition emphasis prepares students for graduate study in nutrition, food science, nutritional biochemistry, dentistry, nursing, physical therapy, or veterinary medicine. Graduates in this major may also work as nutritional advisers in schools, wellness centers, the U.S. military or nonprofit organizations.

The College of Agriculture & Life Sciences, in Tucson, is a small college within a large institution, representing an undergraduate population of 2,700 students in its 15 different majors. This translates into smaller class sizes in major courses for students as well as opportunities for regular interaction with faculty and staff.

Ashford’s Bachelor of Arts in Health and Wellness online degree develops your understanding of the human body about health and disease, exercise, nutrition, and stress management. It explores the dimensions of wellness and the relationship of chronic conditions to their preventive measures and treatment interventions. Through a holistic perspective, you study the implications of positive and negative health practices affecting physical, social, occupational, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, and environmental health.

The curriculum examines major health risks and diseases. You will explore the principal ways to promote health through lifestyle and behavioral change throughout the lifespan. The coursework includes nutrition, health program planning, and community health. You can also add a specialization to your degree to provide further focus to your studies.

There are four categories of study: Health Care Studies, Health Promotion, Psychology, and Health & Wellness. The College of Education and Health Services offers a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics. The mission of the undergraduate this major (Didactic Program in Nutrition and Dietetics, DPD) is to provide quality learning experiences to successfully prepare graduates for supervised practice leading to eligibility for the credentialing exam to become a registered dietitian nutritionist. Graduates will have the skills to demonstrate knowledge, application, and integration of principles of health promotion and disease prevention with normal nutrition, medical nutrition therapy and public health nutrition for varied populations.

The nutrition courses use multiple methods of interaction and assessment, including authentic case studies, presentations, lesson plans, research, laboratory reports, debates, and discussions. In addition, you will gain real on-the-job experience and a professional network through supervised practica.

This ACEND accredited degree will provide career choices in food service as a manager of food services, food broker, or sales representative in restaurants, health care facilities, schools, or industry. Other related choices include quality control, supervision, and culinary education. Students and alumni rate the program very highly. Furthermore, it boasts a one-year 100 percent pass rate for the Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) exam for the past two years.

6. Brigham Young University

BYU’s Bachelor of Science in Food Science studies food utilizing biology, chemistry, nutrition, engineering, and other sciences. Students learn oral and written skills, problem-solving, use of library resources, evaluating information, time management, leadership, and ethical decision-making. You will learn about the chemical changes occurring during food processing and storage, including reactions involving carbohydrates, protein, and fats. Coursework covers the role of microorganisms in food processing, food preservation, and food safety with respect to pathogenic, spoilage, and fermentative microorganisms.

During your junior year, you are encouraged to select a research topic, produce a senior thesis, or work in an approved faculty-supervised summer internship with a food company. The first choice entails working in a research laboratory for 10-20 hours per week over the course of eight months. During this time, you have daily contact with graduate students, technicians, and fellow undergraduate colleagues and frequent interactions with a faculty mentor. You complete the thesis option in collaboration with a faculty mentor. Your library study explores a relevant question that results in a scientific review paper.

7. Brigham Young University

BYU’s Bachelor of Science in Nutritional Science is also a 120-hour program that studies the effects of food components on the metabolism, health, performance, and disease resistance of human and animals. It also includes the study of human behaviors related to food choices. Courses required for the undergraduate major in nutritional science consist of three areas. The core courses provide a broad foundation in nutritional science. The supporting courses include chemistry, biochemistry, physics, statistics, physiology, biology, and molecular biology. The third area includes the nutritional science electives.

Graduates seek employment in major research centers; biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and nutraceutical industries; community nutrition programs; nongovernmental organizations, and the fitness industry. Other job possibilities exist in food security advocacy groups (e.g., food banks, anti-poverty organizations), health advocacy organizations (preventing osteoporosis, cancer, or heart disease), trade groups for commodities (citrus fruits, vegetable growers), and people working to increase food security.

Many graduates with a BS in Nutritional Science have gone on to obtain a graduate degree (e.g. MS, MPH, Ph.D.) at institutions such as BYU and other prominent schools. Medical and dental schools are an option for those planning careers in these fields.

8. Brigham Young University

In addition, BYU has a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD). This program begins with approximately four semesters of pre-professional study, which include general education requirements and specific requirements. Students may then apply for acceptance into the professional sequence, the final two years of study. Professional Sequence coursework includes courses in clinical and community nutrition and foodservice management as well as teaching and research methods in dietetics.

Through the DPD, the student meets all Foundation Knowledge and Skills established by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics for progression to a Dietetic Internship. Successful completion of Program major requirements and University requirements for graduation will qualify students to receive a Verification Statement. The Verification Statement is required for entrance into a Dietetic Internship. During the final semester, you apply for a Dietetic Internship (typically 9-12 months in length; located throughout the US). You must complete this to qualify for the national examination for registered dietitian status.

ACEND accredits the didactic program and the internship.

9. University of California-Davis

Their Food Science Major concentrates on developing the scientific and general background necessary for advanced coursework. They accomplish this by including courses in chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics, and (optionally) introductory food science. In your upper-division courses, you will study nutrition, microbiology and food chemistry, analysis and processing. You may choose to specialize in one of seven career-oriented options: food technology, food business, and management, consumer food science, fermentation science, food biology/microbiology, food chemistry, or food biochemistry.

According to UC-Davis, food science majors have landed careers in large food corporations such as Del Monte, General Mills, Procter & Gamble, Adolph Coors, and Campbell Soup Company. Students specializing in food biochemistry work in a range of technical careers in the food industry, including research and development, quality assurance and food analysis.

Within this major, you have the choice of the Food Science or the Brewing Science option. The former provides a broad exposure to food chemistry, food microbiology, and food processing. It prepares students for graduate study in food science or related programs, and exposes the students to diverse topics, including chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, and processing.

Brewing science prepares students for graduate study in food science or related programs. You study similar sciences as the food science option. The curriculum prepares students for careers in production or quality assurance within the brewing industry or other food fermentation industries.

10. Colorado State University

CSU’s College of Health & Human Sciences has a Nutrition and Food Science program that offers a choice of four concentrations. Coursework includes core science-based courses, theoretical and practical training in specific skill areas such as nutrition counseling techniques, food safety, integrative nutrition and metabolism, and nutrition and the lifecycle. In addition, electives allow students to tailor their program of study to their particular interests.

The concentrations are:

Nutritional Sciences: This concentration emphasizes the physical and biological sciences but includes the social sciences and humanities as well. There is considerably less emphasis on food science and management than in the dietetics concentration. This concentration prepares a student for a graduate program and serves as the basis for a premedical program. Depending on the course selections, the degree can lead to becoming a Registered Dietician. The college states that this Bachelor of Science degree does not provide many job opportunities. Therefore, only students planning to attend graduate or pre-med should consider this program.

Food Safety and Nutrition: Curriculum blends a strong science base with courses in nutrition, food science, food safety, and food microbiology. The concentration prepares students for employment in the food industry or in government in such areas as quality assurance, product development, research, food inspection, food plant management and consumer education. The option also provides an excellent background for a graduate program. Students in the option are encouraged to participate in the Interdisciplinary Studies Program in Food Science/Safety.

Nutrition and Fitness:  This concentration provides a strong foundation in nutritional sciences combined with a broad array of courses in exercise science and physical activity. The educational objectives apply to students with strong interests in the nutritional and physiological sciences who are proficient in a variety of physical activities. It also provides a suitable background for graduate study in either nutrition or exercise science.

Dietetics and Nutrition Management: The dietetics programs provide students with the knowledge and skills required of the dietetics professional for practice roles of today and the future. The program provides adequate freedom for the student to work both independently and in teams in order to build self-reliance, self-confidence, and team building skills. Students will develop critical thinking skills and problem-solving abilities in clinical and community nutrition and food service management. This concentration focuses on students who want to be practicing nutritionists or dietitians. The Dietetics & Nutrition Management offers three options:

11. University of Connecticut

Nutritional Sciences (NUSC) majors integrate knowledge of the use of foods and nutrients by cells, individuals, and communities to promote optimal health and treatment of disease. The Department offers two areas of emphasis; Dietetics (Didactic Program) and Nutritional Sciences, through which students can obtain their Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Nutritional Sciences. 

NUSC majors enrolled in the Nutritional Sciences option integrate the Nutritional Sciences Core Requirements with additional courses in the laboratory or behavioral sciences. Students interested in medicine, dentistry, or other health-related professions will work with faculty advisors to select appropriate supporting courses to meet their academic goals. This option may also lead to a career in academia, government, community nutrition and public health agencies, and the food, dietary supplement or pharmaceutical industry.

NUSC majors enrolled in the Didactic Program follow a curriculum that meets the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics academic requirements. After graduation, the student must complete an independent dietetic internship, also called supervised practice, in order to fulfill the requirements to sit for the National Registration Exam.

12. Eastern Michigan University

Their School of Health Sciences offers a dietetics and human nutrition program both on campus and distance-online. The Bachelor of Science in Dietetics culminates with the registered dietitian credential provides many options for employment. Job opportunities are available in the clinical area in hospitals, long-term care facilities, specialized healthcare settings, and insurance companies. The EMU Coordinated Program (CP) offers the didactic (theory) coursework concurrently with the required 1200 hours of supervised practice experience. Upon successful completion of the CP and conferral of an EMU degree, the school issues the student a verification statement making them eligible to write the Registration Examination for Dietitians through the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).

The Coordinated Programs in Dietetics have a Business Entrepreneurship (BE) concentration designed to begin development of the entry-level depth necessary for future proficiency in business entrepreneurship. Distance-online students gain experience in business entrepreneurship by completing supervised practice experience hours with a private practice Registered Dietitian. All CP students are able to gain valuable skills related to business management including customer service, public speaking, education, counseling, billing, and coding.

This degree is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

13. Florida State University

The College of Human Services offers a Bachelor of Science in Dietetics within the Department of Nutrition, Food and Exercise Sciences. The core dietetics courses have approximately 35 students and consist of group projects, presentations, case studies, and practicum experiences. The curriculum also requires a sports nutrition course. Students may enroll in electives such as exercise physiology or exercise testing and prescription. Once admitted to the program, students typically move through the program in a cohort – taking classes with the same classmates each semester and graduating with those same classmates. The smaller program allows faculty to get to know their students and mentor them.

This Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD prepares individuals for entry-level positions in a variety of food and nutrition settings and for entry into post-baccalaureate dietetic internships and/or graduate school. Graduates will have the requisite knowledge requirements as part of a rigorous science-based curriculum to successfully pursue and complete a Dietetic Internship and ultimately dietetic registration, pursue advanced education opportunities or work in food and nutrition settings.

14. Florida State University

FSU’s College of Human Services offers a Bachelor of Science in Food and Nutrition Science that prepares students for job opportunities in the food industry, government agencies, careers in the medical field, and graduate study in the field. Students study nutrient functions and requirements, metabolism, food quality and safety, the composition and chemical properties of foods, and changes in foods caused by processing, storage, and preparation. Besides studying nutrition, food science, biology, and microbiology, majors must take physics and complete extensive coursework in organic and analytical chemistry.

The curriculum totals 90 hours with 27 hours in department/major requirements and 57 in requirements “outside the College/Department”. Within these 84 hours are the intensive sciences courses covering metabolism, chemistry, microbiology, trigonometry, and biochemistry.

FSU is one of only 115 institutions classified as an “R1 Research University… (Highest research activity)” in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.

15. Framingham State University

FSU celebrated its 175th Anniversary in 2014. In 2002, Kiplinger Magazine ranked the school as one of the top 100 public colleges in the United States, and one of the top five public colleges in New England. In 2008, they celebrated ten years of offering online educational programs.

All students enter the Food and Nutrition major with a General Studies pre-concentration (UFNG). While enrolled in and after completing the Principles of Biochemistry course, students must apply to either the Nutrition and Dietetics or Coordinated Program in Dietetics concentration. This biochemistry course is the fifth of five courses in the YFNG portion.

The Coordinated Program in Dietetics Concentration (UFNP) integrates an academic and supervised practice curriculum to prepare students to be entry-level dietitians.

The Nutrition and Dietetics Concentration (UFND) (Didactic Program in Dietetics) offers an academic curriculum to prepare students for acceptance into a Dietetic Internship to become a Registered Dietitian.

The UFND concentration a GPA of 2.70, a GPA of 2.50 in science courses, and a minimum grade of C- (1.70) in any Biology, Chemistry and Food and Nutrition courses. Upon graduation, students may sit for the Registration Examination for Dietetic Technicians.

The Coordinated Program in Dietetics (CPD) includes both the academic requirements and the supervised practice requirements, which qualify students to take the Registration Examination for Dietitians upon graduation. Admission to the CPD is competitive. Students must apply only in the spring semester. In addition, applicants must be taking or have completed Principles of Biochemistry.

ACEND accredits this Bachelor of Science program.

16. University of Houston

The Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics currently accredits their Bachelor of Science in Human Nutrition and Foods. Upon completion of this degree, also called the Didactic Program in Dietetics, students are eligible to apply for entry into a supervised practice program, which will make them eligible to take the Registration Examination for Dietitians. At the undergraduate level, this degree emphasizes the knowledge and skills essential for competent entry-level dietetics practice.

Supervised practice programs, which include dietetic internships, are available across the country. Students may not apply for entry into a dietetic internship until they successfully complete the Didactic Program in Dietetics.

This program offers two tracks:

Nutritional Fitness: This track emphasizes the basics of nutrition and wellness. Students will receive integrated coursework in both nutrition and kinesiology. In addition, it provides a solid foundation in science, nutrition, and exercise for those looking to work in health and wellness related fields.

Nutritional Science: It is a pre-professional degree plan designed to meet the requirements for Pre-med, dental, optometry, pharmacy and other post-graduate programs in the healthcare arena. Students earning a degree in the Nutritional Sciences track will have an in-depth knowledge of the science of nutrition and a solid foundation in applied science.

17. Indiana University of Pennsylvania

Their Department of Food and Nutrition offers three Bachelor of Science degrees:

Dietetics Track: Students learn about the relationships among academic disciplines (i.e., the natural sciences, including chemistry, physiology, and biochemistry) and apply these scientific principles to the practice of nutrition and dietetics. Topics cover nutrition and disease, careers in food and nutrition, experimental foods, food consumption patterns, nutrition counseling, hospitality purchasing, and principles of management. The completion of the dietetic program prepares students to apply for an ACEND-accredited supervised practice program. This brings you a step closer to becoming a registered dietitian.

Culinary Dietetics: As a nutrition major pursuing this track, you will integrate your nutrition knowledge with classical cuisine. You will be able to bring the culinary arts to food preparation operations in hospitals, extended care facilities, schools, and hospitality destinations. Students admitted will begin their freshman year in the Culinary Dietetics Track on the Indiana campus. For the duration of a student’s sophomore year, they will transfer to the Academy of Culinary Arts at the Punxsutawney campus, and return to Indiana for their junior and senior years.

Nutrition: Students learn about the integration of science and technology in nutrition. You will understand the role of nutrients and healthy food preparation for health and well-being based on scientific principles. Options exist for minors in biology, business administration, chemistry, communications media, educational technology, journalism, psychology, and psychological science.

You can also pursue a certificate in Culinary Arts or Gerontology or concentrations in Hospitality Management or Physical Education and Sport.

These three programs offer undergraduate internships for students who have earned at least 57 credits. A student must work a minimum of 40 hours for each credit and must submit two objectives for each credit. Students must complete the documentation or projects that are included in the objectives.

18. Kansas State University

K-State’s Department of Food, Nutrition, Dietetics, and Health has two ACEND-accredited undergraduate programs. Both are available on campus and online. Their pre-Med and pre-PA programs in Nutritional Sciences and Nutrition and Health are excellent at preparing students to enter those respective fields of medicine; or, to prepare students to be competitive for health science or health promotion jobs, and/or enter graduate programs to further their academic preparation. This department includes graduate and undergraduate programs in Athletic Training, Dietetics, Human Nutrition, Nutritional Sciences, Public Health Nutrition, and Sensory Analysis and Consumer Behavior.

The dietetics curriculum combines courses in biological and physical sciences, the humanities, quantitative studies, business and communications with in-depth courses in food science, nutrition, and foodservice management to provide a strong base for professional success. The Nutritional Sciences degree will appeal to students interested in health science or biomedical careers or those planning to enter graduate programs.

The pre-Med students in this program have an 80% acceptance rate in Medical School. In addition, 100% of their pre-Dental students have been accepted into dental schools over past five years.

19. Kaplan University

Missouri State’s Biomedical Sciences Department aligns related fields, such as biology and chemistry, to focus on individual and public health, including the study of diseases, immune deficiencies, nutrition, and medical testing. This department offers an undergraduate degree in Dietetics that is ACEND accredited.

Students can complete the didactic program of Dietetics at Missouri State University in four years or eight semesters. This does not take into account transfer credit from a university or completion of summer courses, which may alter the sample schedule provided below. You are encouraged to apply to the Dietetics program as soon as you meet the program requirements, but you may declare the Dietetics major at any time. Prerequisite courses are required for several of the required dietetics courses.

The curriculum immerses students in the sciences beginning with chemistry and a chemistry lab in the first semester. Through the next seven semesters, students take courses in microbiology, anatomy, physiology, management, nutrition education, and human genetics, and more. All graduates of the Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) must successfully complete a 1200 hour supervised practice program. This must be at an ACEND approved program before they can take the National Registration Examination for Dietitians.

21. University of Nebraska-Lincoln

UNL’s College of Education & Human Services offers a Bachelor of Science in five options related to nutrition.

  1. Community Health and Wellness: This option prepares graduates to promote healthy lifestyles and enhance the quality of life for individuals and communities while working in a variety of settings to include worksite and health promotion programs, schools, public health agencies, nonprofit health organizations, and voluntary health agencies. This option will interest students planning on pursuing graduate programs in public health, health policy, and other related areas. Upon completion of the option, students will be eligible to sit for the Certified Health Education Specialist.
  2. Culinology: Also known as culinary science, this option deals with culinary arts, nutrition, and the science of food. Culinology is becoming a recognized and valued discipline that will significantly affect food research and development in the global market. Culinologists are skilled chefs who are creating a new generation of exciting, high-quality food products. Associated with this degree is their Meat Culinology Certificate. This six-course sequence teaches students about the consumption of livestock and poultry. The certificate is available online.
  3. Nutrition & Dietetics: This program (Didactic Program in Dietetics) may appeal to students who wish to become registered dietitians and practitioners in clinical, community, food industry, and foodservice areas. Employment exists in hospitals, community agencies, and various government or private organizations.   4. Nutrition Science: Aims at students who wish to combine an emphasis in nutrition with a strong science background. This major provides an appropriate vehicle for pre-medical, pre-dental, nursing, physical therapy, and laboratory technology majors who may be able to obtain a degree in nutrition and simultaneously meet entrance requirements for a professional program. It is also an avenue for students interested in nutrition research and graduate study since it provides an opportunity to emphasize the basic sciences.

The Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics accredits this program. It is a rigorous science-based program. Students learn how to interpret and translate nutrition research into meaningful recommendations for consumers. Most graduates pursue the registered dietitian (RD) credential. There are typically three required steps to obtain the RD credential:

  1. Complete an ACEND-accredited undergraduate nutrition/DPD program.
  2. Complete an ACEND-accredited dietetic internship (also called supervised practice).
  3. Pass the national examination for registered dietitians.

Acceptance into an ACEND-accredited dietetic internship is not guaranteed due to its competitive nature. Nationwide about 50% of the students who apply for internship each year are matched. Most internship programs are traditional face-to-face programs where interns relocate to the home base of the program to complete the required 1200 hours of supervised practice.

Each degree prepares graduates for entry into community food and nutrition-related careers including healthcare, business, and industry. They provide a broad coverage of the interpersonal, conceptual, analytical, and application skills necessary to perform in the food and nutrition-related field.

Their B.S. in Dietetics prepares competent students for supervised practice or entry-level employment utilizing their knowledge and skills in dietetics, food, and nutrition. The baccalaureate degree starts with a strong foundation in the biological sciences. A short list of the courses includes medical nutrition therapy, microbiology, physiology, anatomy, and biochemistry. The Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) accredits the didactic program. However, to become a registered dietitian (R. 28. University of Southern Indiana

The Food and Service Program offers a Food Service Management undergraduate degree. The degree prepares students for entry-level responsibilities of managing the daily operations of restaurants and other establishments. Within the curriculum, students will apply the principles of food production and nutrition by performing as a food service manager. They will design a menu, and supervise production and service of a meal.

Students focus on assessing needs, planning, implementing, and evaluating food service operations. The curriculum requires a senior capstone course. It provides an analysis of current food and nutrition issues and assists in preparing students for entering the job market. Further supporting the transition to the working world, students enroll in a food service related practicum. Additionally, you will take courses in finance, accounting, marketing, and human resource management. This diverse curriculum teaches the skills for graduates to work in food companies, resorts, food & equipment manufacturers, cruise ships, and catering services.

A third degree offered is the B.S. in Nutrition and Wellness. In addition to the same food and nutrition core courses, this program is supplemented with the following:

The goal of this track is to enable students to seek employment in specialized science-based fields in the biological or medical sciences. Choices one and two are 120 credit hours each.

32. Texas A&M University

They also offer an undergraduate degree in Food Science and Technology. The curriculum prepares students with a comprehensive knowledge of the biological, physical, and engineering sciences. Students learn how to develop new food products, design innovative processing technologies, improve food quality and nutritive value, enhance the safety of foods, and ensure the wholesomeness of our food supply.

The Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) approves the coursework that offers two tracks:

  1. Food Science: This track provides a strong knowledge base in chemistry, biology, engineering, physics, statistics, genetics, biochemistry, microbiology, and nutrition. You learn how these sciences apply toward the preservation, processing, packaging, and distribution of foods that are wholesome, affordable, and safe. The goal of the curriculum is to prepare Food Scientists for career opportunities in food and allied industries, or for further studies in graduate or professional schools.
  2. Food Industry: Students learn how the basic disciplines of chemistry, microbiology, physics, and biology apply to food engineering, food processing operations, sensory evaluation, food safety, quality assurance, and management to produce foods that are wholesome, affordable, and safe. The goal of the curriculum is the prepare Food Technologists for careers in food and related industries. These careers may involve food processing, manufacturing, technical service, food product development, operations management, regulatory oversight, and other technology-based opportunities.

The Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) meets the coursework requirements that qualify graduates to apply for a dietetic internship, which leads to the Registered Dietitian credential. Completion of the Didactic Program in Dietetics requirements qualifies a graduate to apply for the exam to become a Dietetic Technician, Registered.

Nutritional Sciences: This option requires courses in science and research in order to prepare students for graduate study or professional school. Graduates may seek employment in private or publicly funded research programs or, upon completion of graduate study, may engage in college or university teaching or nutrition research.

Nutrition and Public Health:  This choice prepares students for entry-level positions in public health and nutrition at state and other health departments, in research, and in industry. It will equip them for entry into graduate programs in nutrition or other public health disciplines at schools of public health, at graduate schools in the biomedical sciences, and for entry into medical or other health professional schools.

Honors in Advanced Nutritional Sciences: Upon acceptance, students take courses in nutrition, research methodology, and writing. In addition, you are encouraged to take honors courses in disciplines outside of nutrition, such as biology, chemistry, and mathematics. Students consult with the departmental honors adviser to develop an individualized and challenging program of study that meets their goals and interests.

Nutrition Honors:  Students who plan to follow this option must be admitted to the Dean’s Scholars Honors Program. International Nutrition:  Students in this option must participate for one semester or summer session in a study abroad program in nutrition offered by the University. Students with an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) may transfer 45 credit hours leaving a balance of 33 hours of the major coursework. The final option is a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition (Dietetics), which is a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD), an accredited program for students who are preparing to become Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs). A Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) is a food and nutrition expert who has met the minimum academic and professional requirements to qualify for the credential “RDN”. The majority of RDNs work as clinical dietitians in the treatment and prevention of diseases using medical nutrition therapy. Clinical dietitians work in hospitals, HMOs, private practice, outpatient clinics, or other healthcare facilities. In addition, a large number work in community and public health settings, schools, food service administration positions, government agencies, pharmaceutical companies, and in academia and research. 39. Western Illinois University

The school also offers a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) to prepare graduates with the knowledge and competencies to enter a supervised practice program. Alternatively, those who prefer to embark on a nutrition-related health career including becoming a registered dietitian. However, to be accepted you must complete 60 semester hours (s. h.) with a minimum cumulative 3.00 GPA. After acceptance, each student must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher on a 4.0 scale to remain in the program.

Upon completion of this ACEND accredited bachelor’s degree with an option in Dietetics, a graduate receives a verification statement. A graduate of the DPD is eligible to apply for admission into an accredited dietetic internship program. A verification statement is required for admission into an accredited dietetic internship program. The dietetic internship follows graduation and several factors affect acceptance, including grade point average, work experience, faculty recommendations, and participation in dietetic related activities and organizations.
